Mawei

Mawei is a small city, administratively part of Fuzhou in Fujian. It is the port area. Take a bus or taxi from Fuzhou, about 20 minutes. If you are coming from the airport in Changle, Mawei is closer than downtown Fuzhou. There is a museum. Much of it is devoted to the French attack on Mawei dockyard in the 1880s that sank a substantial part of the Chinese navy and killed hundreds. The conflict was over French expansion into Vietnam, which China considered to be within their sphere of influence. A factory in Mawei makes shoes for Adidas and Reebok.
