Jieyang

Jieyang City is situated in the south-east of Guangdong, neighboring Shantou and Chaozhou to its east, Shanwei to its west, South China Sea to its south, Meizhou and Xingning to its north. The land area is 5,240.5 square kilometers, with a coastal line of 82 km and 30 coastal isles. The topography is slanting from the west to the east, with low hills and valleys interposed between. In the north-west is mostly hilly land; in the central and the southeast are vast fertile alluvial plains on Rongjiang River and coastal sedimentation plains. Jieyang belongs to the subtropical monsoon climate, with plenty of sunlight, and rainfall, no snow and little frost. The annual average temperature is 21,4 °C; the average rainfall is 1723 mm. In summer and autumn it suffers from attach of strong tropical storm; sometimes as the result of abnormal monsoon storm, or cold current there will be drought in winter and spring or low temperature and raining in early spring. Jieyang has a long history, which has appeared in historical record for over 2,200 years. It got its name from the Jieyang Ridge, one of the five ancient ridges. In the Warring Kingdoms, it belonged to Baiyue. After the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty conquered Yue, in the 33rd year(214 B.C.) of his reign he set up Jieyang Garrison District., under the jurisdiction of Nanhai Prefecture. In the 6th year of the Reign of Yuanding of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, (111B.C.) it was set up as Jieyang County, with jurisdiction over four counties Chaoyang, Xingmei and Longxi, and Zhangpu of South Fujian of today. In the 6th year of the Reign of Xianhe of Emperor Cheng of the East Jin Dynasty (331 A.D.), Jieyang fell into four counties: Haiyang, Chaoyang, Haining and Sui-An.. Afterwards it underwent cancelling and resetting several times. In the 10th year of the Reign of Shaoxing of the Song Dynasty (1140 A.D.) it was Jieyang again. After the founding of New China, Jieyang County carried on under the jurisdiction of Chaoshan Prefecture, East Guangdong Administrative Region, Shantou Prefecture, and Shantou City. On December 7, 1991 Jieyang County was rescinded and Jieyang City ( at prefecture level) was established in its stead by the approval of the State Council with jurisdiction over Rongcheng District, and three counties, Jiedong, Jiexi and Huilai, and with mandate of Puning City (at the county level). Rongcheng, the urban district, is a famous historical cultural city in Guangdong. The Municipality is seated in Yanjiang Road, of the Dongshan Section. Yieyang is a city at prefecture level with the greatest population in East Guangdong. The population of Hans makes up 99.99% of the total and there are some minorities like the Huis, Manchurians, Miaos, Zhuangs, Lis, Thais, and Jings.
