Maoming

Maoming City is situated in the south-west of Guangdong Province, bordering on Yangjiang in the east, Zhanjiang in the west, Yunfu and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the north, and South China Sea in the south. In history it belonged to the area of Baiyue; in the Sui Dynasty it was Maoming County, in the years after the Han Dynasty it fell within Gaoliang Prefecture, while in the Ming and Qing Dynasty it was under Gaozhou Prefecture. In Aug. 26, 1958 the southern part of Maoming County was demarcated out for building into Maoming Industrial Mining District to convenience the exploring and processing of kerogen shale; in March 22, 1959, Maoming City was set up by the approval of the State Council, to be under the direct jurisdiction of the Province. In July 1983, the system of city exercising jurisdiction over counties was carried out in Maoming, governing Maonan District, Dianbai County, and 3 cities at county level like Gaozhou, Xinyi and Huazhou and Shuidong Economic Development Experimental District.
