PalauPalau, officially the Republic of Palau, is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest nations. It is sometimes referred to in English under its native name Belau. Melekeok is a town and one of Palau's sixteen states. It is located on the east coast of Palau's largest island, Babeldaob. Melekeok is 11 square miles in area and situated between Ngchesar to the south and Ngiwal to the north. As of 7 October 2006, the city of Melekeok became the seat of Palau's government, replacing Koror as the nation's capital city.
