Holy SeeThe Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes, "holy seat") is the episcopal see of Rome. The Holy See orThe Vatican City State is situated on the Vatican hill, on the right bank of the Tiber River, within the city of Rome, Italy in Southern Europe.The incumbent of the see is the Bishop of Rome — the Pope. The term Holy See, as used in Canon law, also refers to the Pope and the Roman Curia—in effect, the central government of the Catholic Church—and is the sense more widely used today.The Lateran Treaty of Feb. 11, 1929, between the Vatican and the kingdom of Italy, established the autonomy of the Holy See.
