Ludwigshafen am RheinLudwigshafen on the Rhine is to Mannheim the second largest city of the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar.
Ludwigshafen is simultaneous a circle-free city and administrative seat the city of surrounding state Rhineland-Palantine circle (until 2003 district Ludwigshafen). Been because of the left Rhine bank opposite the city of Baden-Württemberg Mannheim, went to Ludwigshafen once out of the former Mannheimer Rhine-digs out. Today the city is particularly well-known as seat of the BASF.
As one of the five upper centers of the country Rhineland-Palatinate Ludwigshafen forms the core of the European Metropolregion Rhine Neckar triangle together with its neighbour city of Baden-Wuerttemberg Mannheim. Further nearer-lying large cities are Heidelberg (about 25 km southeast), Karlsruhe (about 50 km south) and Mainz (about 60 km north).
